Guides for Gran Hotel

Image result for gran hotel
Update - 4/5/17 - The guides have been updated to reflect the DVD times (since it is no longer available on Netflix). Also, episode 4 and episode 5 are new content because DVDs are so long.

Recommended reading: Mike Peto's post about teaching with telenovelas.

After having so much success with El Internado in my Cultura y Civilización class, I decided that I wanted to use another television series for Spanish 3 and I decided on Gran Hotel. Gran Hotel is another highly engaging Spanish series. It does have some adult themes and would probably be rated PG-13.

So this past spring I bought Mike Peto's student guide for episode 1 of Gran Hotel. Using Gran Hotel in Spanish 3 went very well because Mike's guide is so thorough and comprehensible! On his blog, Mike shares so much about how to teach with television shows, so that helped me a lot as well.

I contacted him and he invited me to collaborate on creating more guides. So far this summer, we have completed student guides for episode 2 and episode 3, with more on the way (hopefully two more by the end of August). At the beginning of the guides, Mike wrote a couple of pages (click here to read it) describing how he recommends using the guides. I highly recommend reading his explanation if you are interested in teaching with a television series.

I think these guides are going to be one of my most powerful teaching tools! My colleague will be using them in Spanish 3 first semester and I am going to use them in AP Spanish second semester.

A colleague and I have also created a permission slip. In this permission slip, we included the reason why we are using this show: "Research shows that the triple connection between image, sound and text is a very powerful and engaging way for students to learn a second language. Watching this series  and hearing authentic native speakers will increase students’ listening comprehension skills while helping them improve grammar and proficiency. This is also an excellent way to expose students to Spanish culture."

My colleague also created this very basic personajes slideshow to use. This will be very helpful when reviewing the characters, especially during the first episode if it has been a few days since watching a scene.

I usually don't sell my materials, but Mike and I have put in so much time and effort into these guides that I have decided to go the Teachers Pay Teachers route with Mike. I think these guides are worth it! If you spend 15-20 minutes for 3-4 days a week with the method that Mike describes, you can spend 2-3 weeks on one episode.

  1. Thank you for doing this! I am on the fence between Internado and Gran Hotel for my Spanish 4 Honors group this year. I personally love Gran Hotel but wonder if they might be more interested in Internado due to age, etc. I need to watch more of it myself to see.

  2. Hi Travis. Both El Internado and Gran Hotel are very engaging. I had several students watching Gran Hotel outside of class for their Tarea Semanal last year and they really liked it! And they are the students who were watching El Internado in class. One student even liked Gran Hotel more :)

Whichever one you choose, I highly recommend using the reading guides and going *slowly*. Even though students will whine a bit, there is much more learning that happens! I show both El Internado and Gran Hotel with in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. We watch in short segments and then do the readings toghether and/or other activities.

Here are my El Internado guides (free): http://reflecciones-kj.blogspot.com/2014/11/adding-to-resources-for-el-internado.html

But, Mike Peto's are much more comprehensive (and that is why they are $6.99 each :) ) https://mrpeto.wordpress.com/el-internado-resources/

  3. Dear Kara,
I just watched the first episode of Gran Hotel and absolutely loved it! I will definitely use it in my Spanish 3 this year. I look forward to checking out your work on Gran Hotel as well as that of Mike Peto. I was able to find Gran Hotel with English subtitles on Netflix. Do you have a resource for finding it with Spanish subtitles? Thank you so much for all the information you have shared. Your blog is phenomenal; I always look forward to reading it!
    Atentamente,
    Sara

    1. Hi Sara,

You can put the subtitles in Spanish as well. See bottom right icon. Let me know if you can't figure it out and I can send you a screen ahot of what it looks like.

And thanks for your kind words about my blog :)

    2. Hi, Kara. Thank you for your advice - found it! Also -- we have worked with the first episode in Spanish 3 this year, and then my students let me know that Netflix if pulling it off their website on November 15th. We are so disappointed, and also hopeful that another streaming service will pick it up soon. I know that it's available from Amazon in the Region 2 DVD format. Do you know if anyone has had any success with using the European DVDs? My students have fallen in love with the show, so much so that a couple of them have watched up to 8 episodes on their own.
      Atentamente,
      Sara

    3. Hi Sara, If you google "vcl media player," you can download it and play a Region 2 DVD on your computer. It is easy and free :) You can buy the DVDs on Amazon.

Have you and your students submitted a request to keep Gran Hotel? I would do that too. El Internado went off Netflix and then came back.

Glad to hear that it is going well for you with your students!

  5. Are there anymore episodes being developed? I will most certainly purchase all materials you two create for Gran Hotel. I am showing episode 5 all next week and then there isn't anymore material available. Maybe I'll try to make a packet along the lines of yours. HA! But it won't be as good...

  6. Hi Kara, I love all of your materials. I am going to teach Gran Hotel for the first time in Spanish IV this fall and am putting together some resources. Do you have other guides finished past episode 5? I want to purchase everything you have! Gracias :)

    1. Hi Karen! That is all we have so far. But that is 1x1:15 per episode, so if you go slow and use the guides that is a lot of time! We are thinking about adding some other things this summer. Such a great resource - so engaging! But, I do have a tip, don't build it up too much. Tell them it is a real series that we will be using to learn Spanish. Also, it is so important to tell them that you will be going *slowly*. If expectations are low, they will enjoy it more ;)

    2. OK, thanks Kara! We will go sloooowly! I binge watched the whole thing on Netflix last summer and loved it so much I bought the DVDs. Thanks for the good tip - you are right, low expectations and pleasant surprises are so much better! Gracias por responder tan rápidamente. ¡Disfruta el verano! :)
