A new *appropriate* series: Go! Vive a tu manera

Want something to talk about with students!?! Check out the series Go! Vive a tu manera on Netflix. 

It is super cursi, but also pretty engaging. My AP students and I are (very slowly) watching it now and we are kinda love-hating it (well, at least I am!). 

It is set in a boarding school, St. Mary, that has a special program for the arts called Go!. The school is in Argentina, so my students are hearing and seeing (Spanish subtitles) a ton of that Argentinian accent and the voseo (which I love because I studied abroad in Buenos Aires). 

And it is rated PG! There are no swears and no nudity! Yay! Check out the trailer here.

So, we are watching, pausing (a lot), and discussing as we watch each day. We have been spending 20-30 minutes a day doing this and it is going very well. After each episode, they will fill out this sheet (feel free to make a copy and adapt) and we will discuss that as well. 

I am considering using this show with my Spanish 3s at the end of the year (I am done June 25th). With them, I will probably do "Write and discuss" each day and then do Textivate with the text that we create. I might also use this sheet (slightly adapted from the one above).

  1. My students are obsessed with this show and many of my level 1 students are watching it on their own now! Thanks for the worksheets- I am definitely incorporating this show in my teaching next year!

  3. Hey, thanks for the tip Kara! I've been watching it and thinking of you during the most eye-rolling scenes jajaja! Do you know what the presence of the Portuguese speaking characters relates to historically or politically? I can't believe I'm asking you before I google it, but hey! what the heck!

    1. Not sure, but I am assuming that it would just be Brazilians studying in Argentina? Since they are neighboring countries.

  5. How do you use it in lower level? Thinking of 2 but it’s too much even with Spanish subtitles.

    1. Hello! It isn't about what they hear and read (Spanish subtitles) while watching... it is about all the other stuff that the teacher does to comprehensify before, during, and after watching segments of 3-5 minutes.

      It takes a LONG time to get through one episode.

      Not included in this post are 5 pages of **lecturas** for the first episode. The *reading* is where the CI comes in. The show and what they hear and read is not CI, but rather a super-engaging authentic resource.

  6. Would it be fine to use the english subtitles with beginning Spanish 2?

    1. You could, but that defeats the purpose of explaining everything to them in comprehensible Spanish. They will not need that if they understand *everything* while watching and they won't want to do the follow up activities, as they would end up being for "language practice", rather than actually explaining what happened and clarifying.

  7. I love using the viewing guides that you have for episodes 1-6! Have you made any more in that style? I hate to change the format they they have been used to all year. I would be willing to pay. Mil gracias!
