Another Story/Song of the Week for Novices

Oh, how I love teaching Spanish 1!

Update 9/26/19: I have added a Quizlet set with comprehension questions, a textivate, a dictation, some other homework-type activities in the doc, and screenshots to review the story.

Update 1/25/20: Here is another activity from TeachVid.

I can write up short, basic stories and get so much out of them. I can also get them really liking Spanish class and very engaged... especially with fun music videos and stories.

Step 1: Tell your students that you are going to tell them a story based on a music video. Tell them they will get to see the video after they listen and understand the story.

Step 2: Tell students the story (click here or see below) (which leaves out some key details and the ending). You can do a listen a draw, read it directly to them, read it to them and act it out, project and read together, read alone, or whatever!

Step 3: Watch your students watch the video and see their reactions. So fun! #Engagement

Step 4: Do the cloze activity with the song.

Step 5-??: Do some other activities with the story, such as cierto/falso, re-tells (spoken or written), the marker game, Quizlet Live, Kahoot, comprehension questions, etc.

  2. Kara, heard you on the Inspired podcast and I am IN LOVE with your ideas. I was thinking about purchasing your bundle but I'm unsure of the levels. I teach 8th grade level 1-2 students and I'm not sure if enough of the songs are level appropriate. Should I purchase separately?

    1. Hello and thank you! The bundle is what I used in level 1, when I taught it two years ago. You can see the list of songs there. I would check for appropriateness, but in the meantime, there is lots of free stuff here on my blog too!

  3. Oooh! This is great! This will help bridge my Spanish 1s (Grade 9s!) into the Go! Vive unit I bought (I was a bit worried it would be too much of a leap to go from the song stories to the the Show unit). Thanks for so kindly sharing! I will have to look up this band too!

    1. Hello! A "cloze activity" is a "fill in the blank" activity? :)

  5. Hi Kara,
My classes have really enjoyed this story this week. Thank you! I have a question about the dictation. The link is to a FlipGrid, but I don't have access (I know it's for your students)...just curious. Do you record a video of you saying the sentences for them to watch/listen and write down the dictation. Is there an advantage to video with FlipGrid as opposed to just making an audio recording?
    Thanks!
    Chrissy

    1. Hi Chrissy,

So, I like to do dictations on Flipgrid because students can listen to it as many times as they need to without the stress of having to ask me to repeat 5 times! I like a video as opposed to an audio because I think it is better so see me. Here is a public link: https://flipgrid.com/9c44f41d You will see that I am very helpful and slow for them. They did an excellent job!

    2. Thanks, Kara! I love this idea. I'm going to have my students do this on our computer lab day.

  6. I have another question...
For the past 2 years, I paid for a Textivate membership so that my students could join my classes and I could see their completion of the sequences I set up. I haven't wanted to spend the $$ this year, so I didn't renew my subscription. Do you just use the free Textivate and it's practice for them, but you can't see what they've completed?

    1. I pay for it and think it is totally worth it! I create "sequences" with stories and they have to complete them throughout the week as homework or sometimes classwork. I blogged a bit about it here: http://www.ceauthres.com/2018/02/textivate-to-review-stories.html I really like being able to track them.

Here is the sequence that I used last week for this "La estudiante diferente": https://www.textivate.com/m_1in3-b55ln1e001 Some activities in the sequence are super easy because I set it to have to (robot-like) audio. That way they get the audio input and the reading input. The sequence starts with Spanish-English and then goes to the story - put in order in a variety of ways.

  10. I saved this story several years ago thinking it would be perfect for when I have to teach the "school" unit from the textbook in level 1, but this is the first time I've taught the class since then and IT IS SAVING ME from textbook purgatory. Thank you once again for sharing your creations. I love having my students engaged in class and being able to put everything back in context like language acquisition is meant to be.
